Victorian gin producer Apollo Bay Distillery has issued an urgent recall, after discovering that some of their gin bottles had been filled with hand sanitiser by mistake.

The recall relates to nine 700ml bottles of SS Casino Dry Gin that were sold at their Great Ocean Road Brewhouse between Friday, June 5 – Sunday, June 7.

The bottles contain cleaning agents such as glycerol and hydrogen peroxide, which can cause nausea, headaches, vomiting, dizziness, bloating, and diarrhoea, if consumed.

The Apollo Bay Distillery issued a notice on its Facebook page yesterday to alert consumers to the error. “The product is labelled as gin, but it is not gin,” the post said. “The bottles are not correctly sealed, they can be identified as having no shrink wrap seal.”

Anyone who has purchased the ‘gin’ should not drink it. The distillery has urged them to get in touch for a full refund or replacement.
