A new rooftop bar and 210-seat Vietnamese-French restaurant open in Sydney's CBD

The team behind Sydney’s multi-levelled Hinchcliff House, House Made Hospitality, has continued its culinary takeover of the CBD’s Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, opening a sprawling terrace bar and Vietnamese-French restaurant on the hotel’s fifth level. Wentworth Bar and Delta Rue join Bar Tilda and Tilda, which opened on the ground floor earlier this month.

After a meticulous 10-month renovation, the U-shaped Wentworth Bar is set to reclaim its status as the spot to be, blending its rich history with a curvaceous, mid-century modern fit-out. In homage to the hotel’s 1966 debut, the 250-seat indoor-outdoor space is all black-and-white terrazzo tabletops and pops of tropical greens and a tree that was dropped onto the rooftop via a crane.

The U-shaped rooftop bar has lived a long and glamorous life – first as a guest-only hangout and most recently as French restaurant Garden Court. Now, the sky-scraping bar will reopen as Wentworth Bar with a kitsch cocktail list and a globe-trotting snack menu on October 25.

A twist on the Japanese Slipper comes as a blend of Los Arcos tequila, yuzucello, Midori, fresh lime and a sprig of Vietnamese mint. If you’re feeling very social though, there are large-format ‘party cocktails’, with a whopping 12 drinks per brew.

Snacks range from oyster mushroom spring rolls, to Italian-inspired chicken cotoletta, and heartier dishes like a spiced barramundi curry and wok-fried egg noodles.

Coinciding with the roof’s re-entry to society is the opening of Vietnamese-French restaurant Delta Rue right next door on level five. Inspired by 1920s Hanoi, Delta Rue arrives complete with an intimate Champagne bar, a 150-seat restaurant and 60-seat terrace.

Dinner may start, perhaps, with a classic Sidecar pairing Cognac with house-made mango cordial, lemon and red pepper or a 90s throwback: a French Martini.

Head chef Phot Arnupapdecha (Madame Hanoi, Orana) and House Made Hospitality’s Elliott Pinn have worked together to create an elegant – and at times, interactive – menu with vibrant, punchy, sweet-sour dishes and a roaming bánh mi cart.

Seafood-centric mains include pipis in lemongrass sate with vermicelli noodles, and John Dory marinated with lemongrass and galangal, and meatier numbers like dry-aged steak with shaking beef sauce and bearnaise with French fries.

The lush, vibrant menu is reflected in Delta Rue’s decor – a dining space anchored by a sprawling nature-inspired feature wall of tropical birds with green and grey hues. Reclaimed teak chairs surround pill-shaped tables accented with green linoleum tops, and grey limestone pavers blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Wentworth Bar and Delta Rue open October 25 at Level 5, 61 – 101 Phillip Street, Sydney. For more details and to make a reservation, head to the website here.
