Hot diggity dog.
Not just the home of flatpack furniture, Ikea is also the world’s largest hotdog vendor, with more than 100 million hot dogs sold every year (including 2.2 million in Australia).
The beloved Ikea hot dog is universally acknowledged as a reward that one gives oneself for successfully navigating the store, it also provides the sustenance needed to then go home and assemble your new Malm dresser.
Vegetarians can now get in on the $1 hotdog action, with Ikea Australia announcing the launch of a new veggie dog, which lands in stores today.
The new veg-friendly footy frank is made from kale, red lentils, quinoa and ginger in a soft bun, topped with red cabbage, crispy fried onions and mustard. The hot dogs were trialed in Malmö, Sweden where they earned a 95 percent approval rating among customers.
Ikea Australia also plans to add another six more vegetarian items to its menu over the next year, including a plant-based soft-serve.
Alexandra Herbert from Ikea Food Australia said that Ikea is also looking to improve the quality of their meat products, with a renewed focus on free-range options.
“When we talk about sustainability it’s not just in the plant-based economy, which is great, but it’s also making sure those people who do wish to partake in an animal diet know there are options that have been carefully thought about,” she said.
Ikea’s veggie hot dogs are priced at $1 each or $6 for a takehome pack of 10. They are currently available in Tempe, Rhodes and Marsden Park stores in NSW, as well as the ACT. All other stores will get their veggie dogs in the upcoming weeks.
