World's first chicken nugget has been launched into space

Chicken nugget space.

What a waste of a good nug.

It’s a day for the history books. It has been confirmed that British supermarket chain Iceland Foods has just launched the world’s first chicken nugget into space. It is unclear whether sauce has been sent up also.

Flight provider Sent Into Space was responsible for launching the breaded snack into the stratosphere, which was made possible thanks to a specially-designed meteorological weather balloon.

To ensure its safety, the nugget was strapped with an auxiliary satellite tracking system and integrated camera support, which also allowed the experience to be filmed for the benefit of future fried food journeys.

The nugget managed to go higher than any nugget before it, up to 33,528 metres above the earth, which is 880,000 nuggets high.

While usually destined for the deep fryer, this particular nugget experienced temperatures of -60°C, much colder than any conventional freezer.

We have lift-off.

Despite the extreme conditions, the nugget managed to make it back down to earth safely. The little nuggie descended at 322km/h with the help of a specially designed nugget parachute that deployed 19km from the ground.

The extraordinary expedition was coordinated in celebration of Iceland Foods’ 50th birthday.

“What better way to show that our products are out of this world than by sending one of our customer favourites into space,” Iceland Foods trading director Andrew Staniland said.

“We’ve all changed the way we shop in recent months and frozen food has never been so popular. We’re looking forward to continuing to celebrate our 50th year with customers and thanking them for their support.”
