Melbourne's original laneway bar is closing

The end of an era for one iconic drinking den.

Melbourne’s laneway drinking dens may now be a dime-a-dozen, but that wasn’t always the case. Flashback 23 years ago and Meyers Place was one of the first to lead the way for the city’s clandestine sipping spots

Designed by Six Degrees Architects, the bar opened in 1994 on a minuscule budget of $30,000. With such a limited budget, a memorable fit-out of the space took hold, recycled timber and shagpile carpet included.

But now, despite ongoing trade for more than 20 years, the inner-city bar is taking a final bow. After being told by the building’s owner that the lease will not be renewed, Meyers Place’s final day of trade is predicted to be June 10.

Though it doesn’t look like the end of the road for owners Drew Pettifer and Heather Lakin, who are currently scoping out another site for relocation. A similar design is planned, where the duo hope to capture the spirit of the original bar in a nearby location. Shagpile included.
