Beneath the streets of Melbourne, where secrets often find their home, a killer hot spot emerges: Purple Pit.

Open today, December 12, details have been scarce but whispers of the basement bar are exciting enough to stir anticipation among the city’s cocktail aficionados.

Behind the curtain of the enigmatic space are two legendary names in hospitality: Maurice Terzini (Icebergs Dining Room + Bar, RE, Jacksons on George) and Joe Jones (Romeo Lane – Best Cocktail Bar and Bar of the year and Bartender of the Year).

The drinks list is set to be a cracker, with cocktails like the “Bellini,” a marriage of peach essence and burnt honey vodka; and the “Emerald City,” a summer highball of jasmine spirit, lemon, sherry, and green apple soda.

The piece de resistance has got to be the stunningly beautiful oyster platter, with ice cold vodka adorning. It’s giving baller energy.

Of course, it’s not just about the drinks. Terzini and Jones, masters of indulgence, have crafted a food menu that they whimsically dub “Champagne food.” It’s the stuff of dreams when you’re sipping your favourite libation, aperitivo-inspired bites and late-night delights. From house-made calzones stuffed with mortadella, ricotta, and fermented chilli to a playful nod to comfort with a Big Mac-inspired twist, the menu is equal parts high-brow and down-and-dirty deliciousness.

As for the design, it’s all about contrasts – the raw allure of brutalism intertwined with opulent textures is fitting for the Gothic Bank basement location. Collaborating with Daniel Dalla Riva and Filip Bjazevic of Latitude Group, and Studio Massive, Terzini and Jones bring to life their eight-year dream. Purple Pit is a manifestation of their shared love for European hotel bars, painted with an alternative lens, where elegance will meet rebellion in a truly exciting manner.
