Vegas isn't known for being modest.
It’s the city built on the principle of bigger, better, brighter. And we’ve all had our fair share of Vegas stories (what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas right?). But Vegas is changing with the influx of international chefs setting up shop and a number of resorts undergoing major renovations.
The latest, a $620 million project, by Palms Casino, has seen a complete revamp of the property including a new bar designed by British artist Damien Hirst. The bar, called Unknown, features works by Hirst and stars a giant tiger shark severed into three pieces in formaldehyde-filled glass and steel tanks. Multicoloured spots, from a series called Stearic Acids, also by Hirst decorate the surrounding walls and has been integrated into the overall design of the bar from the swizzle sticks to the napkins and even the casino chips.
It’s not the first time the artist has been involved in a hospitality project, having delved into the space with Pharmacy 2, the restaurant at his London gallery in 2016.
“A lot of museums can feel like they’re made for dead artists, not a very exciting place to hang art,” Hirst told the Los Angeles Times. “I’ve always liked how art can exist anywhere. You don’t always need white walls and a perfect white room to show contemporary art. What we’ve done here, with the Unknown Bar, the art really stands up and feels so alive.”
More than 150 pieces of contemporary art have been displayed as part of the new renovation, with works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Christopher Wool and Richard Prince also on show. Beyond the bar, the casino also features a new steak restaurant, Scotch 80 Prime, which now includes one of the largest retail selections of steak in the U.S, as well as a new cocktail lounge, social club, and accommodation.
