SA’s home of the ‘bronut’, which is essentially a brown (read: Nutella) donut, this French-style bakery churns out flakey croissants, brioche, loaves and scrolls. The Clare Valley happens to be home to one of Australia’s only stone milled durum flour producers, Pangkarra, making it an ideal setting for a bakery. Their loaves are hearty and their sweet treats maximise on local flavours: think seasonal fruits including rhubarb and quandongs. 12 Main N Rd, Clare
One word: sfogliatelle. Italy’s glorious semolina and ricotta-filled pastries are one of Abbots and Kinney’s biggest drawcards, along with their famous pies, of course. Global flavours are the order of the day at this homely café and bakery. Think Thai beef pies, Persian love cakes and macarons in rotating flavours (chocolate freckle and strawberry lime have both graced the cabinet). And, they take their coffee seriously here, too. 16 McHenry St, Adelaide

The historic corner-store bakery in North Adelaide is one of the city’s favourites. Their pies and pasties are award-winning, but it’s their German treats that has folks flocking here: kitchener buns, Berliner doughnuts, and Grandma Perry’s streusel buns are the highlights. 54 Tynte Street North Adelaide
