7-Eleven rolls out onigiri to two new Aussie states as Japanese-style snack takeover begins

Onigiri

Say konichiwa to your on-the-go lunch!

When news broke of the Japanese-style changes coming to Australian 7-Elevens, our little hearts soared at the prospect of reliving travel memories at bargain basement prices. Excitingly, some of those changes are already rolling out, and the introduction of fresh onigiri to New South Wales and Queensland has us very excited.

The onigiri (Japanese rice balls) are a staple across Japan, and have been available in Victoria 7-Elevens for a couple of years now, just like the sushi that Australians across the country have been enjoying.

However, the roll-out to two extra states is a good sign of potential things to come. Available in three flavours; Cooked Spicy Tuna, Chicken Teriyaki or Sweet Chilli Salmon. The simple and comforting nori-wrapped rice retail from $3.70 and are a refreshing change from the stodgy sausage rolls and scalding meat pies that we’re used to grabbing at the servo.

The onigiri is a first step in what 7-Eleven chief executive Angus McKay described as a “long-term focus on our food offerings”.
