Starting with table service.
Who would have thought that a modest hamburger shop could have amassed such an empire? With humble beginnings in the 1940s in California, the takeaway brand is nothing short of a giant on the food scene and a favourite for takeaway, amassing around $5 billion in sales annually. But the McDonald’s as we know it is about to change following the announcement of key changes by the brand this week.
First up – delivery. Earlier this week McDonald’s confirmed a new partnership with UberEats that will see the delivery service rolled out for the full menu with a $5 delivery charge on top. “We are excited to bring Australians this new level of convenience through our partnership with UberEats,” says COO of McDonald’s Australia Shaun Ruming. “The delivery market in Australia is a multi-billion dollar industry. We think that’s an important thing for us to be involved in.”
But convenience for the brand is about to extend beyond home delivery, and expand into table service. The company confirmed that table service will soon be available in 75-85 percent of its venues. “In some of the food courts you can’t do [table service], but most of our restaurants will be offering table delivery,” Shaun told News.com.au. “It’s particularly popular with mums and people who don’t want to stand at the counter. They want to sit down and wait while someone brings out their food.”
McDonald’s next hurdle will be to overhaul its greasy reputation, adopting the wellbeing trend that has swept the nation. “We want to be a part of people’s everyday lives and choices and to do that you need to offer more than just hamburgers and fries,” continues “There’s huge growth in salads, wraps and people buying water and coffee [10 per cent of McDonald’s sales are from coffee],” he says.
“If you’re not modern and progressive and keeping up with what the trends are, then our customers are going to go to other places. There’s a lot of choice out there so we have to make sure McDonald’s is one of those choices.”
