And we don’t think there’s anyone out there who would disagree.
Twenty of the country’s best-loved recipes have battled it out in a nationwide poll to discover which is Australia’s favourite. The winner, of course, was the humble potato bake.
The survey was conducted by Australia’s Best Recipes and featured 20 of their highest-scoring recipes. The Aussie gratin took out some tough competition to make it to the top, including the meat pie, Anzac biscuit, even a cheesy bacon cob. Over 40 per cent of all respondents voted for the potato bake, which gave it a substantial lead over second place, which was the shepherd’s pie.
“We’ve been noticing a trend towards nostalgic, home-cooked food for a while now, and a lot of the dishes that ranked highly in the list definitely fit with that,” said Australia’s Best Recipes editor Lara Paturzo.
“But we hadn’t expected a dish that is so simple to be the overall winner. It definitely shows that while many of us love experimenting with new flavours in the kitchen, we keep coming back to the classics that remind us of our childhoods.”
