Senpai Ramen has opened in the Inner West with Japanese soft serves and shaved ice desserts

The soy sauce-spiked soft serve is our new favourite after-dinner treat.

Chase Kojima has brought his popular Chatswood restaurant Senpai Ramen to Sydney’s inner west.

The northside diner is famed for its nine-course omakase-style menu, which finishes with a hearty bowl of Japanese ramen.

The Burwood outpost is more approachable, with an a la carte menu and a no-reservations policy.

The menu has also been expanded to include donburi bowls, ramen, snacks and salads, with a kakigori shaved ice menu for dessert.

Expect playful dishes like the Senpai Caesar, tossed with romaine lettuce with crispy sushi rice, ramen egg and nori dressing, or the loaded fries topped with Hokkaido curry sauce, pickled ginger and spring onions.

Diners may notice the double-doored freezer in the dining room, which holds crystal-clear ice blocks ready to be spun into towering snow cones.

The menu includes four kakigori desserts, made from a pile of shaved iced finished with luxe syrups and toppings, including coconut milk foam, white sesame praline and strawberry meringue.

It’s a tough choice between the kakigori and the umami soft serve, which is flavoured with caramelised milk and soy sauce, then swirled into a black charcoal cone.

“Our aim is to bring the fine dining experience to Burwood but making it accessible for everyone to enjoy, including families. We want to bring those luxe vibes at an affordable price tag,” Senpai Ramen’s Chase Kojima said.

The venue has the same distinctive neon-lit interiors, with a large communal table for a quick lunch or dinner.
