The Dolphin Hotel's latest sandwich looks set to take the crown for Sydney's best off A1 Canteen.
There’s something eternally alluring about two slices of bread within which is wedged a series of different stuffings. The humble sanga holds endless appeal and continues to be reinvented by culinary experts to prove itself a dish perfect for eating outside of the playground and in some of the world’s best restaurants (as proven recently by delicious.).
Perhaps the most successful sandwich story of late comes courtesy of A1 Canteen, where owner Clayton Wells created one the year’s most Instagrammed dishes in the form of the Muffuletta.
But a new contender has thrown itself into the ring; one that is just as Italian as Wells’ Sicilian treat. Namely, Surry Hills’ Dolphin Hotel has just welcomed the Fresh Pitza Pocket to its rotating Proper Sandwiches menu.
The punnily named sanga of sorts consists of a soft fresh pita bread stuffed with chilli-laden spicy meatballs, bunches of lettuce, pepper relish, Caesar dressing and shreds of Parmesan.
“The real question isn’t why have we made a meatball pita,” says executive chef Monty Koludrovic, “but why haven’t we always had one?
Its star quality is not in fact down to the meatballs (which we can confirm are delicious) but the pita itself. “We make the bread to order in the pizza section, so it’s as warm and fresh as possible,” comments Koludrovic.
Luckily for those interested to try it for themselves, the Fresh Pitza Pocket has been promised to remain on the menu for some time yet thanks to its early success: “we sold 50 in the first day,” says Koludrovic. Of course it helps that The Dolphin’s new offering isn’t just tasty but rather light on your wallet – you’ll be set back a mere $12 compared to the muffuletta’s $18.
Is this Sydney’s next viral sandwich? Only time will tell, but our money’s on the meatball.
