A national icon has hit the specials board.
It seems Australia’s Coat of Arms is inspiring more than patriotism as of late. The iconic emblem of the nation is making its way onto the menu of one of Sydney’s CBD restaurants, well part of it is anyway.
Specifically, the city’s Gowings Bar & Grill, which sits within the design-savvy QT Hotel, has just confirmed that emu eggs have just been added to the menu. Gowings is partnering its emu egg (once fried) with ragu veal sweet bread, and truffle slipper jack mushrooms. Designed to share, all elements can be arranged around the fried emu egg, to be eaten as a truffle and sweet bread fondue. Feeding groups of three to four people, the emu-based dish comes at the cost of $80.
While the ingredient may not yet be a common one found on menu cards, it’s not the first time that the emu has landed on a list of dining options Down Under. Melbourne’s much celebrated Attica (which placed at number 20 at this year’s 50 Best Restaurants awards) has long garnered attention for its Australian-themed dishes, most notably the Whipped Emu Egg.
As to whether emu will prove a new culinary favourite for the community, the jury’s still out. But those who have long been curious to know what our Coat of Arms tastes like, now’s your chance to find out.
