Introducing the McVeggie.
McDonald’s has just released its first-ever plant-based burger into Australian stores, however, vegetarians are not necessarily lovin’ it.
The new veggie burger is made from a vegetable patty, which contains potatoes, peas, corn, carrots and onion, topped with cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise and pickles, on a sesame seed bun.
While that all sounds well and good, the catch is, the burger is not actually vegetarian as it’s made using the same cooking methods as other meat items.
If it’s the same issue that the McVeggie burger is experiencing in New Zealand, it’s because the vegetable patty is fried in the same oil used to cook the chicken.
While it may not be suitable for strict vegetarians, it’s a good option for those looking to cut down on their meat consumption, and a step in the right direction for the fast-food chain.
Jenni Dill, Chief Marketing Officer for McDonald’s Australia, commented: “We know there’s an appetite for alternatives to traditional meat proteins and Australians are looking for more plant-based options in their diet.
“As a business constantly focused on responding to what Australians want, we’re excited to now be serving up the McVeggie Burger to our customers across the country,” said Ms Dill.
The McVeggie Burger will be available after 10:30am at all McDonald’s restaurants across Australia from today.
