Fitzroy espresso nook Napier Quarter has taken matters into its own hands in the war on waste, recently banning takeaway coffee from the establishment. Owner Daniel Lewis told news.com.au that the Melbourne cafe will no longer offer the option from December 21, instead encouraging patrons to enjoy their regular brew sitting down.
The decision is primarily based on the ongoing waste crisis (and the one billion coffee cups thrown away every year), but is also an opportunity for customers to slow down says Lewis.
“We’re not trying to be the crusader of [reducing] waste,” he told news.com.au. “But we have a responsibility in this takeaway culture … to actually stop and think about what it’s doing on a larger scale.”
Unsurprisingly the response so far has been mixed, with many complaining that the ban is unfair to those who are time-short. But the cafe hopes that lowered coffee prices will help to encourage more customers to take their time — prices have dropped from $3 to $2 for espresso, and from $4 to $3.50 for a standard drink.
But will Lewis’ strong stance prove effective? Well, the proof is really in the pudding, or in this instance, the dine-in latte.
