A new Bondi cafe with plenty of heart

Heart Cafe

The beachside suburb’s first social enterprise cafe is here.

Brunch is now being served with a side of social justice in Bondi thanks to the emergence of Heart Cafe. As its name suggests, the new eatery is a social enterprise that is focused on lending a helping hand to disadvantaged youth. The breakfast space has integrated a youth unemployment program into its midst, so that you can sip on your morning coffee and give back to the community all at once.

Heart Cafe is owned and run by fellow Bondi local, the not-for-profit Wayside Chapel, a company well acquainted with giving back to the community. The Chapel launched its Wingspan Project to help young people facing unemployment, providing them with a paid hospitality traineeships at Heart Cafe for 12 months. At the end of their course, trainees will receive a Cert II in Hospitality to help kick start their careers.

But for those just interested in a quality feed to start the day, the cafe also has that in spades. Classic cafe fare will feature, all with the expected Bondi edge. Breakfast bowls, salads, and coffee courtesy of Gypsy Espresso have found their way on the menu.

“We’re delighted to have the chance to bring a unique and fresh perspective to the Bondi cafe dining scene,” says Pastor and CEO of Wayside Chapel Jon Owen. “Heart Cafe is one-of-a-kind and goes beyond quality coffee, healthy food and good service – it returns hope to the lives of unemployed young people by supporting them into paid hospitality traineeships and breaking the cycle of unemployment. Our aim is to create community and an opportunity for locals to give back. We know everyone in the Eastern Suburbs will embrace Heart Cafe as a new local meeting place.”

Cafe manager (and Bondi local) Mo Rosa agrees that Heart Cafe has plenty to offer its new neighbourhood. “The cafe will serve a delicious wholefood menu using fresh, local ingredients including some organic produce sourced directly from the Wayside Chapel community garden, less than 50 metres away – giving true meaning to our sustainable and local philosophy,” she says. “It’s wonderful that the local community will be able to feel great in knowing that every dollar they spend, will be used for social good.”

Heart Cafe will open on Wednesday, November 14. It will trade from 7.00am to 4.00pm, seven days a week.
