Head to Mama's Boy for the city's best hot chicken roll (we're calling it).
There’s a new reason to “accidentally” leave your lunch on the kitchen bench. The team from Shwarmama has wrapped up their popular Surry Hills kebab shop to focus on fancy sandwiches.
Inspired by the Aussie sandwich shop, Mama’s Boy serves up a tight selection of sangas with a cheffy touch. “We’ve kept the menu small so everything has a reason to be there,” says co-owner Mat Lindsay, who also hails from Poly, Ester and nearby AP Bakery.
The short menu includes three breakfast items and six for lunch including a classic deviled egg and lettuce number and a healthy salad sandwich called the “Frankenstein”, layered with beetroot, carrot, cucumber, butter lettuce, and whipped feta.
For something a bit beefier, there’s the patty melt. “Essentially, it’s just a cheeseburger on bread. The original version is made from a burger patty with cheese and lots of caramelised onion, and then we’ve added barbecue sauce, mustard and pickles,” Lindsay tells delicious.

Mama’s Boy is also bringing back the old carvery classic, the hot chicken roll, which is made from rotisserie chook, roasted on the old Shwarmama spit.
“We’ve given the chicken a nice barbecue spice and then it’s served with iceberg lettuce, gravy and lots and lots of aioli.”
In the coming weeks, Mat will start adding sandwich specials to the menu.
For your afternoon sugar hit, Mama’s Boy will serve up an exclusive bakery treat from AP Bakery. On our visit, it’s a fragrant cardamom-spiced morning bun.
The new venue takes over from Shwarmama, which closed recently without warning. Mat Lindsay explains that Mama’s Boy is geared more towards the morning and lunch crowds.
