Tayim rolls into Sydney’s Rocks

Tayim Grilled Chicken Masahan

New restaurant set to be a welcome addition to the popular dining district.

Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct has a handsome new resident in the shape of Tayim restaurant.

Serving a blend of traditional and modern Middle Eastern cuisine, Tayim has taken up residence in the Harbour Rocks Hotel, in what was previously Scarlet Restaurant. A sympathetic redesign in keeping with the building’s heritage features by Sydney architects Welsh + Major has resulted in an expanded bar and dining area, in which an open grill and communal table take pride of place.

Sandstone walls are draped in bespoke wall coverings, complemented with contemporary furnishings in earthy tones for a cosy and welcoming feel. A long balcony opens up on to The Rocks’ Nurses Walk. The striking indoor bar is certain to be a Rocks hotspot.

Tayim roasted figs, goats cheese

Leading the kitchen in the seven-day-a-week venue is talented head chef Ram Kimelfeld (formerly of Nour in Surry Hills). He’ll be celebrating the region’s bold flavours and sharing traditions with signature dishes such as grilled sardine shakshuka and summer mushroom borekas. Diners can also look forward to Kimelfeld’s adaptations of Middle Eastern classics, including roasted figs with radicchio and goat’s cheese, and semolina rose pudding with pistachio meringue and berries.

Looking after the libatious side of things is highly regarded drinks maestro Reuvin Lim, whose resumé includes Sake, Cho Cho San and Tequila Mockingbird. Lim and his team have curated a wine list taking in makers from Australia, Turkey, France, Italy and more, and designed to complement the earthy spice notes of Kimelfeld’s cooking. Seasonal cocktails will include twists on contemporary classics.

Tayim Spiced Negroni

Also moving into the space is Tayim Deli, which will serve takeaway Middle Eastern street food from breakfast through to mid-afternoon, seven days a week.
