The new permanent menu item will revolve around its specially-developed pea protein and beetroot slab, which will come topped with lettuce, tomato and pickles on a soft milk bun.

Mary’s may be famous for its juicy flame-grilled beef and crispy fried chicken, but that doesn’t mean their veg burger has been given any less love. The cult menu item is stuffed with a giant field mushroom, sizzled in garlic butter on the grill first, then loaded with lettuce, onion and molten cheese on a brioche bun. Head down to their Circular Quay branch and you can also get your hands on their vegan ‘fried chicken’ made from deep fried cauliflower.

This ethical fast food chain specialise in mock meats from Beyond Meat beef to Chick’n and Phish burgers. Just because it’s vegetarian doesn’t mean it has to be healthy. The most lust-worthy of the lot is their Parma Burger, which embraces big, dirty burger love with it’s plant-based Chick’n schnitzel smothered with Napoli sauce, vegan cheese and fake bacon.

For something a little bit different, Betty’s Burgers has decided to go with a mushroom, cheese and panko crumbed patty, however, it’s the oozy melted Gouda and Gruyere cheese sauce that really steals the show. Because this is a Queensland brand, they also let you add Aussie extras like beetroot and a fried egg.

Ribs & Burgers have recreated their two best-selling burgers, the Original Burger and the Old School Burger, using Beyond Meat, a new breed of vegan patty that’s designed to replicate beef right down to its fibrous texture and juicy, pink centre.

The Drake from Milky Lane comes piled high with toppings and condiments to give you the same sloppy satisfaction as you get from everything else on the menu. Get ready for one big mouthful, filled with a mushroom and mac ‘n’ cheese patty, sweet potato fries, truffle aioli, caramelised onion, butter leaf lettuce, pickles, onion and sliced tomato. Surely that’s your five serves right there.

You can now get any burger on the Huxtaburger menu made with an Alternative Meat Co or fried chick’n patty. Plus, they also offer a Mexican bean burger and a kale and quinoa burger – how’s that for choice? And with sides like gravy fries, onion rings and tater tots, we can guarantee you won’t go hungry.

It’s hard to believe but Soul Burger’s entire menu is meat-free. Yes, even the Portuguese chicken, chilli beef, BBQ bacon, battered fish and chorizo burgers. For a proper veg out, try the pulled pork burger made from pulled barbecue jackfruit with apple slaw, peri peri sauce and aioli, with a dairy-free shake of course.

If you’re not a fan of the fake steak, Burger Project also offer a magic mushroom burger that takes it back to basics with its classic combo of crumbed confit mushroom with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles on a soft milk bun. Vegan and gluten-intolerant diners can also choose to ditch the bun and get their burger served in a crisp, lettuce bowl.

It’s true, vegetarian burgers can sometimes taste a little bland, but not the kakiage burger from Ume. The stack is centred around a crunchy hunk of finely sliced vegetable tempura then topped with high-flavour condiments from a seaweed mayonnaise to a sweet Japanese tonkatsu barbecue sauce.
