At just eight square metres, the bright and breezy Little Roger is tiny but big on delivering excellent coffee in a cosy outdoor space. A devoted crowd of regulars line up for the Black Lab coffee (what else would it be?), cinnamon buns and berry compote with Greek yoghurt and granola. But it’s the loyal customers that make all the difference here. When Little Roger was inundated in the Brisbane floods, the locals showed up, cleaned up and generally helped get the cafe back on its feet. Scientists Josh and Louise may not have hospitality backgrounds, but they both have a sense of humour. Mount Gravatt’s Little Black Pug cafe’s menu lists Chia-huahua (chia pudding with housemade granola and pear and rhubarb compote), Hash Puppies and, of course, the obligatory Dog’s Breakfast. Fur parents to two little black pugs – Bowie and Mate – their pup menu features grain-free beef and vegetable meatball, puppycinos with lactose-free milk, and there are assorted K9 treats too. Fronting Latrobe Terrace, Sassafras Canteen has been slinging breakfast, brunch and lunch in their converted worker’s cottage in Paddington since 1997. And their shaded, hidden courtyard is one of the pet-friendliest in Brisbane. Locals call it Sass. Taking care of everyone is a priority with vegan, kids, gluten-free, and dairy-free options, as well as a dedicated doggo menu that includes vegan chews and a puppucino/Cooper’s Cookies doggy biscuit combo. A little further out at semi-rural Samford, health-conscious pup parents and their happy charges are well taken care of at the 100 per cent organic Canter & Colt. Serving fair-trade Montville Certified Organic Coffee, they canter towards eggs (scrambled or fried) on their Canter No5 with feta, housemade pesto and avocado with dukkah. If you’re looking for something more virtuous, there are smoothie and Buddha bowls, raw salads with zucchini noodles, chia bircher muesli and paleo tuna mix with paleo bread.
