Morris is a multi-generational, family winery in Rutherglen, northern Victoria. They are famed for producing some of the most outstanding fortified wines in the world – rich, viscous, dark old sweet wines that you nearly need a spoon to drink. The barrels that contain these amazing liquids are employed to mature local Rutherglen whisky, with the resulting Morris single malt an incredibly complex, soft and smooth spirit. Taka is owned and operated by proud Aboriginal woman Niyoka Bundle and her family and focuses on native produce gin production. A portion of the ingredients are foraged from around Melbourne while native plants included in the recipe are also sourced from Indigenous wild harvesters Natif Super Foods and Warndu. It’s subtle in flavour, citrusy and refreshing with a light, botanical, herbal lift. Drink it with soda to see the nuances. This is a very special gin that goes a lot further than you think.

Chinotto is that bitter, sarsaparilla-like Italian drink that kind of polarises for it’s unusual, burned orange and sweet bark-like scents and flavours. The use of chinotto barrels here is pretty amazing, lending the whisky a subtle smoky, cola-like character which builds complexity in the amazing, rich, caramel whisky profile from Lark. A very special, fancy present for a dad with a fine nose for rare and unique whisky. This is really outstanding.

Gun bartender/hospitality supremo Ed Loveday (Brose, ACME, The Passage, Prince Of York) has crafted a range of pre-batch cocktails with an eye on major personality and deliciousness. Far and away from generic offerings, these colourful, hugely delicious mixed drinks are bursting with good times flavour. This Old Fashioned comes with signature Loveday twists, switching out a classic recipe for Barcadi 8 Rum, salted honey syrup, Angostura bitters and chocolate bitters. If you absolutely, positively, must get dad a bottle of red wine for Father’s Day then how about supporting an independent, relatively new, rising star producer? Agricola is changing up the image of traditional winemaking in a very traditional region with young gun winemaker Callum Powell eking out small-batch wines under his label, Agricola. This is beautiful, silky, perfumed shiraz from the Eden Valley. It’s a limited release that’s so very refined, elegant and straight-up good. Drink now or tell dad to cellar for taste and posterity.

Wild fermentation underpins the tangy, tart and very cleansing Cleansing Ale from artisan brewer Two Metre Tall. This husband-and-wife brewery is located in the south of Tasmania on a farm that supports grain, hop, fruit tree and livestock growing. The beers are some of Australia’s most unique in flavour profile and character, with a track record of charismatic, personality-filled brews. This is a very special beer that takes a long time to make, a good one for dads who take it nice and slow.

The amazing brewing family at Sailor’s Grave partnered with Aboriginal academic, author and mentor Bruce Pascoe (Dark Emu) to produce this fantastic, landmark beer. While it’s a rich but fresh-feeling lager built around roasted barley malt, the beer is brewed using mamadyang ngalluk and burru ngalluk (indigenous grass seeds native to east Gippsland) from Bruce’s property. The grass seeds lend extra complexity and dimension to this beer. It’s an impressive and thoughtful present for dad.

The Aboriginal-owned and operated craft brewery, Sobah, focuses entirely on legit-tasting, native ingredient focused non-alcoholic beers. And they’re absolutely fantastic. This is a limited release that sort of feels like a sour-fruit beer does, tart with the Davidson plum fruitiness and yet a little pleasingly herbal-bitter too. The beers are packed with character and deliver dad an opportunity to ease up off the gas – a good thing to keep his motor humming!
