That ‘70s style: decoding the retro home wares trend

70s

Flares on the catwalk = 70s style at home

You’ve seen the 70s trend flood catwalks – flares, fringing and denim have popped up everywhere lately. Seen on a roll call of fashion-forward it girls from Alexa Chung in denim dungarees to Diane Kruger in high-waisted flares, it’s garnered serious momentum as a trend with legs. But what does this 70s flashback mean for the homewares crew?

Wood, a prominent 70s furnishing feature, has been given an update today and is back again for another spin. Colours like woody brown, ochre, orange, mustard and cedar are everywhere, as well as accent shades like lime green, purple and aqua. The trick with these trends is not to saturate the look – keep it simple and only use a few accents, otherwise your house will end up looking like a set from That 70s Show. Other key trends? Boxy silhouettes, wooden lamps with copper and brass fittings, and egg chairs, says Zoe Dent from The Wedding Nest.
