Why you need to stop hosting dinner parties

... and start hosting breakfast parties. Seriously, it's all about the breakfast party.

Let’s get one thing straight: from here on in, I’m giving breakfast a capital B, because Breakfast is the king of all meals. Everyone loves Breakfast – especially on a Sunday, and especially when they don’t have to do anything but sit and eat. Breakfast is a time to go nuts – think American Diner-big, think Last Supper-huge, think OTT! By the time you’re done with them, your guests should be so stuffed they need a sleep on the lounge to get over it. (And because it’s Sunday, they totally can).

However… nobody wants to be running around like a crazy person or getting up at 4am to entertain on a Sunday. To avoid this, some items can be bought, and some can be prepared the night before – two good reasons why hosting a breakfast is so good! And while you’re out shopping, don’t forget to grab some newspapers and a couple of magazines, like delicious. (just a suggestion…) to toss on the table for your guests to read while they relax.

To start everyone off, grab a champagne glass, pour a little white peach juice or similar, and top it up with some bubbles. Then sip it. And sip again…

Next comes coffee. If you don’t have a decent coffee machine, get a partner, friend or helper to do a coffee run. Make sure it’s there when your guests get there. Sure, we all know how bad it is to be around hangry people… but someone who is caffeine-deprived can be way worse.

The first course can be done the night before on a platter. It gives people something to graze on straight away. Meats, feta, fresh sliced breads, even a little hummus, cured salmon and cream cheese. For sweet lovers, set out yoghurts, granola or Bircher and fresh berries.

Next up, eggs – because it’s not a Breakfast without eggs. You can split people into two groups; those who like runny eggs and those who do not (I’ll leave it up to you to decide who the serial killers are). This doesn’t have to be an issue. To cut your time and please everyone, do hard-boiled eggs (ahead of time) for the hardies and a loose scramble served in the pan for the table (which saves washing up) for the runnies. Depending on how many people you have, you can vary where you cook your bacon. On the BBQ outside and back in the oven to hold is always best.

These are just the staples, but if you want to go all out, a few slices of avo, some haloumi, tomatoes and mushrooms can be the accompaniments.

Last but not least – the sweets! Baked ricotta cake, Nutella-filled doughnuts, cinnamon pastry scrolls. Yum! Don’t make these yourself – go to a great baker and grab a whole mess of small, gorgeous treats.

Breakfast food doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be yummy. Breakfasts like these are just as good as a sleep-in, and just as satisfying. And once everyone’s eaten their fill, the only thing left to do is to bring out the leftovers and throw them on the table for when everyone wakes up.
