Now this is what we call delicious furniture

As soon as we saw food-themed shoes, we knew fast food furniture couldn’t be far behind. Words by Lindy Alexander.

Provocative Belgian-Dutch duo Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel from Studio Job have created a hot dog shaped couch and a burger chair as part of their collaboration with Italian brand Seletti.

The furniture, which is part of Studio Job’s Un-Limited Editions collection, will be on show at the upcoming Maison & Object design fair in Paris.

Smeets and Tyngael, who love to play with high and low-end concepts, were inspired by hot dogs and burgers as the “iconic image of American pop culture”. And looking at the pieces, it’s easy to see that even though it’s the pair’s first venture into upholstery, they’ve hit the mark.

The furniture is both whimsical and sassy – the hamburger chair has a golden bun and patty for the seat, with the cushions created to look like a tomato and gherkin. The top of the bun, complete with sesame seeds, forms the backrest.

The hot dog chair is mesmerising, predominantly because of the centrepiece of the sausage with its wave of bright mustard sitting atop the white fluffy base of the bun. A thick slice of tomato and pickled cucumber accompany the hot dog.

While the furniture is creating murmurs of appreciation throughout the Internet, not everyone is thrilled with the playful ideas of fast food being so pervasive. The pieces have been getting a serve from some people on the World Wide Web, who have questioned whether we really need furniture inspired by fast food. “[There is] no word if the food or the buns are made with organic fabrics and fillings or whether, like most hot dogs, they are full of chemicals and artificial fillers and ingredients,” says a statement on Treehugger.com.

Either way, we’d still like fries with that.
