Mr Jason Grant is a Sydney-based interior stylist known for his laid-back, casual Australian style, so who better to give us a crash course in creating a chic, Aussie Christmas table setting? Jason shares his top party hosting tips, including Champagne, pavlova, bare feet, staying relaxed and dining alfresco. We’re listening!
How are your styling your Christmas table?
This year I’m vibing a slightly more restrained colour palette. I’m usually the first to embrace colour, but instead white and natural elements are on the cards for a simple look – think bare wooden surfaces topped with neutral natural fibres, sculptural driftwood and native flowers, teamed with classic white plates and soft linen napery. Layer the table with placemats, table runners and linen to add interest without overcomplicating things, and remember not to overcrowd the table – make sure there is room to serve and for your guests to have a conversation.
What’s on your Christmas menu
Food is my favourite part of Christmas. This year it will be traditional with an Australian summer vibe, of course, and local and organic where possible – Christmas ham, prawns, pavlova and lots of salads and sweet treats.
What drinks will you be serving at Christmas?
Champagne, and I’m working on a special little cocktail for the day. Otherwise, you can find me sipping something summery like an Aperol spritz.
What’s the secret to being a great host during the festive season?
Staying relaxed and making your guests feel welcome.
What makes a great party?
Good food, good friends and great weather.
How do you put your personal spin on Christmas?
I love creating a unique look table for a dinner party: a centrepiece of in-season flowers makes for a great focal point. I’m not a fan of having everything matching on the table, I prefer a mismatched feel for a fun vibe.
How do you get ahead?
It’s all about being organised and prepared in advance so, on the day, everything is ready to go. Make a list and get everything done before the guests arrive, also know what needs to be done as they arrive and have a game plan. Make it appear effortless, no one likes a stressed host
What’s the perfect Christmas Day look?
Relaxed, but with a little consideration, and usually barefoot! I’m always swim ready.
As a guest, should you bring a gift for your host?
Yes! Champagne or chocolates.
Indoors or alfresco?
Dinning outdoors when possible, because we can!
What’s your favourite time of day to entertain – lunch or dinner?
Definitely dinner using mood lighting such as candles, which add to the atmosphere.
Is it OK to Instagram at the table?
Of course! As long as it’s a great pic!
Is it worse for a guest to arrive late or early?
Early is a little awkward late is OK – fashionably late is fine, but not too late.
Do you cater for fussy eaters?
I try to eat and cook with great natural ingredients where possible, pleasing most dietary requirements.
Champagne or cocktails?
Both. Champagne to start, followed by margaritas.
Share platters or individual plates?
Share food is the best food. I love this style of entertaining
Stemware or stemless glasses?
A mix of both. Champagne requires a stem.
Hangover cure?
Hamburgers.
