Lauren Campbell today lives and works in the Byron Bay Hinterland – a far cry from a childhood spent on Sydney’s north shore. Brisbane’s Milly Dent opened her Sydney studio in 2014, soon gaining a name for herself for pieces that are both sculptural and practical. Her angular cups and plates are decorated in a distinctive marbling that has continued throughout her collections, including the most recent made after completing an artist residency in Japan’s Arita. Melbourne textile designer-turned-ceramicist Chela Edmunds is behind Takeawai – the name is a merging of takeaway and ‘wei’ meaning your protective energy. Edmunds fell in love with ceramics while working as a designer in New York, but it was back in Australia, in the coastal town of Torquay where her passion for pottery took flight. Adelaide potter Katia Carletti is rather traditional when it comes to her designs, creating her sculptural range of ceramics using a hand built, pinching technique in her home studio. Drawing inspiration from the natural world around her (and a penchant for folk art), Carletti hopes to create work that is not only functional but nice to look at.
