Tiktok has brought the goods again, this time by way of a US creator visiting Paris and discovering a “food hack” that blew her mind. Wait for it.

Butter on sandwiches.

A US woman living in Paris, France shared a video earlier this month of her making sandwiches, explaining the French do something “very weird” that she thought her followers would “find strange”.

“What they do, it’s like a classic sandwich, is ham, cheese and … butter. Literally, just swab it on. No mayonnaise. No mustard. Just butter,” creator, mover, and shaker Amanda Rollins explained.

“And no, listen, I know you might be thinking that sounds gross but it’s actually so good.”

The responses from around the globe have been utter perfection, with many baffled by how the primary purpose of butter is just being discovered in the land of the free.

One commenter, who gained 22,000 likes in support, expressed the confusion that the rest of us experienced upon viewing the video; “WHAT IS GOING ON IS THIS A PRANK.”

Then the Americans piped up. “Americans use butter all the time, but we don’t usually put it on a cold sandwich,” one said. Another stressed it was a geographical thing, saying “I’m from the dead centre of the US and have never put mayo on a sandwich, ALWAYS use butter.”

And while it may pale in comparison to other US oddities like, oh, let’s say, the privatisation of health and prison systems, gun violence as the largest killer of children annually, or the endless attacks on human rights, the great butter revelation may just be a bridge too far.
