And the yellow ones aren't lemon btw. Words by Elizabeth McDonald and Alison Turner.
Sorry, but you’ve been living a lie. Allen’s Snakes Alive flavours aren’t what you thought they were. In a bombshell revelation in 2024, Australian comedian and podcaster Tanya Hennessey took to TikTok claiming that the Allen’s jelly snake flavours were a mind-bending fallacy.
Hennessey shocked when she divulged what she’d learned.
“I found out some distressing news last night, and I just thought I would throw the information your way,” she said. “You know the orange Allen’s snake – what do you think the flavour is? Orange, right?
No! The flavour is actually apricot! WHAT?!”

The podcaster and corgi-owner then went on and – brace yourself – the green snake is lemon flavoured. Lemon! The famously yellow fruit. That one!
We reached out to Allen’s at the time to find out a) how long were they going to let us live this lie? And b) was there anything else they would like to share with the group?
Senior Corporate Affairs Manager for Nestlé, Lauren Lecordier (the parent company of Allen’s) told delicious. that Hennessey was spot on, complimenting her astute observation, “Tanya Hennessey obviously has a well-tuned palate – she’s absolutely correct!”

At that time, the flavours and colours in the Allen’s Snakes Alive bag were:
Green – Lemon
Orange – Apricot
Yellow – Pineapple
Red – Strawberry
Purple – Blackberry
Ledordier continued, “Our lolly fans told us that their favourite Snakes Alive flavour was red or purple (64%) – so last year we also introduced Allen’s Berry Snakes Alive, with the blackberry (purple) and strawberry (red) snakes our fans already love, plus blueberry (light purple) and raspberry (pink).”
But the plot thickens. As if this story couldn’t get any more complicated, earlier this year Allen’s once again pulled the rug from beneath us and completely changed those orange (but not orange) snakes.
In a whole new set of data, orange (formerly apricot) was the “least preferred flavour” in the Snakes Alive line-up of red (strawberry), purple (blackberry), orange (not orange), yellow (vomit) and green (inexplicably, lemon, not lime).
To address this problem, the Allen’s team went to the town of Orange in NSW to taste-test a new orange snake flavour. And yes, you guessed it, that flavour is…. ora… oh, wait, sorry, passionfruit. It’s passionfruit.
Apparently, so good is this new passionfruit-flavoured orange snake (which really must be developing some sssserious identity issues right about now), they say it is now ranking equal first alongside fan favourite, the strawberry red snake. Bold call, Allen’s. Bold call.
If you’re now a little lost (same), here’s where the flavours all currently stand:
Green – Lemon
Orange – Passionfruit
Yellow – Pineapple
Red – Strawberry
Purple – Blackberry
We need to lie down.
