What other secrets are you keeping, South Australia?

When delicious. recently published a ranking of the best vanilla ice creams you can find in the supermarket, apparently, we ruffled some feathers. Specifically, South Australian feathers.

“Golden North Vanilla ice cream is THE best ice cream…EVER!” said one commenter.

“Golden North made in Laura SA support my local business,” cried another.

As it turns out, these southern Aussies have yet another state-based specialty that the rest of Australia hasn’t heard of. Introducing, Golden North.

A blue tub of Golden North vanilla ice cream made from Australian ingredients. Two scoops of ice cream are shown on the front.

Established by William Bowker and his family in Laura, a township 240 kilometres north of Adelaide, the selling of fresh milk and cream from the Bowker farm in 1880 quickly expanded to the company’s first ice cream production in 1923.

A star was born in 1940 when Golden North introduced Australia’s first half-gallon (that’s two litres in new money) ice cream tubs, and the company cemented its place as South Australian royalty when it joined the dairy don, Farmers Union in 1983.

As if that wasn’t enough, a group of five South Australian families then bought Golden North in 2001 restoring it to private ownership. We’re powerless to resist.

We may have missed it on our vanilla ice cream ranking but the Golden North range doesn’t start and end there. Sorbets, dairy-free, Giant Twins ice cream bars, flavours like salted caramel, rum and raisin, lime twist, mango, boysenberry – we’ve really been sleeping on this one and need to make up for lost time. Pass the spoon!

The Golden North ice cream is another on the list of homegrown, locally owned products that South Australians are fiercely proud of and fiercely loyal to. Just like their Balfours frog cakes, Fruchocs, Yo-Yos, Coppers beer, and Farmers Union Iced Coffee, South Australia has a long, long history of supporting local.
