Two cute new cakes have hit supermarket shelves and shoppers aren't happy

Coles Celebration Cakes

Well, this takes the cake!

Throwing a five year old’s birthday party just got that much easier.

While everyone agrees that Coles’ new Koala Cake and Snag the Sausage Dog are two of the cutest confections around, not everybody is happy with the $29 price tag.

Within days of the gateaux launching, shoppers have taken to TikTok to share their dismay at the dollar signs.

“It’s just a sponge cake with jam. It’s only $29 because it’s ‘fancy’ and aimed at parents,” one person suggested.

“These are mass produced and kept frozen. $30 for a frozen cake is absurd,” another added.

Another claimed: “It’s a lamington with eyes.”

“For $29 it better be fully organic, sprinkled with chia seeds AND sing the Aussie anthem,” one chipped in.

“The price is not cute,” said another.

The cake is indeed a vanilla sponge, filled with jam and topped with sprinkles.  The price tag is even more of a surprise given that the supermarket’s Traditional Cream Filled Dusted Sponge costs just shy of $7.

Meanwhile, other shoppers declared the grocery item “too cute to resist”, with others commenting how easy and convenient it would be for a kid’s birthday party.

The Koala isn’t the only new addition to the supermarket bakery. There’s also Snag the Sausage Dog, a chocolate sponge roll, covered in milk chocolate and decorated with chocolate buttons and sprinkles.

The good news is, if you don’t need an adorable koala or puppy-shaped cake. You can always go back to the classic mud, which remains at just $6.40.
