A national food producers’ association has come up with a “gallery of horrors” that features pizzas from around the world boasting outlandish, distinctly un-Italian toppings. Mama Mia!

The decision to curate this never ending train wreck was to highlight the indignities that the world’s favourite food has suffered at the hands of the non-Italians out there. A particularly gnarly combination of crickets and cannabis out of Vietnam has raised eyebrows as has South Africa’s zebra and banana pizza. But no “pizza” has caused more concern than the snake pie out of Hong Kong.

The collection of weird pizzas, dubbed by the food association Coldiretti the “pizzeria of horrors”, has gone on display at a food fair in Naples, the home of pizza.

Australians aren’t off the hook, with a kangaroo pizza on display leaving the Italians shuddering. Please, no one tell them about hotdog stuffed pizza crust.

The purpose of the collection, aside from presumably just a hint of sado-masochism, is to draw attention to the rise in Italian-sounding food products imitating the real deal. In 2017, the art of pizza making in Naples was added to Unesco’s list of intangible heritage and extends to a wider range of protected names and practices like Champagne making, parmigiano reggiano production and the use of names like feta and cheddar.

“Guaranteeing the authenticity of pizza recipes and the art of preparation means defending a dish that is an integral part of our traditions,” said Ettore Prandini, the president of Coldiretti.
