The sweet truth about honey.
Bad news for honey lovers. If you’ve been subbing in honey for sugar, hold off: sugar is sugar is sugar, no matter what form it comes in.
A new study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, shows that there’s essentially no difference between natural honey, cane sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Participants consumed the three sugars and then researchers checked their blood sugars, insulin levels, body weight, cholesterol and blood pressure. The only identifiable change was one type of blood fat (which is a marker for heart disease) that rose after consuming all three.
The takeaway? All sugars are created equal. So if you’re going to indulge, you may as well have the white stuff.
