Need an excuse for getting a little too emotional last night?
Next time you get teary after a few drinks, you can blame the G&Ts.
A study into drinking and emotions has revealed that gin is more likely to get you teary than beer or wine.
The study, which surveyed over 30,000 people between the ages of 18-24, attempted to get to the bottom of how different drinks can make you feel.
The results, published in the British Medical Journal, revealed that drinking spirits, like gin, were more likely to induce negative feelings than any other type of alcohol.
Over half the respondents in the study claimed that after drinking spirits they were more likely to feel aggressive, restless or tearful.
The study also found that people found red wine made them more lethargic than white wine, with red wine linked to the highest level of tiredness.
Public Health Wales’ director of public policy, Professor Mark Bellis said the results may have an obvious cause.
“Spirits are often consumed more quickly and have much higher concentrations of alcohol in them. This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase.
“Emotions experienced could also be related to when the alcohol is drunk, the levels of alcohol within each beverage type and the different compounds found in different drinks.”
Not all existing research agrees with the findings. A study in 2010 showed that people may simply exhibit behaviours that they associate with a spirit.
“Placebo effects that are observed often appear to be due to the individual attempting to compensate for the expected effects of the alcohol, rather than the individual behaving according to some alcohol expectancy,” the report concluded.
While the jury is still out, at least you have an excuse for crying over your ex last night.
