Science confirms organic is better

Especially if you're a big meat and dairy eater.

Two shiny new papers add to the mounting stack of evidence that organic animal products are better for you than their traditionally-farmed counterparts.

The two articles, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, examined and cross-reference almost 200 already-published papers to draw new analysis on organic cows milk and 67 papers on organic meats (this covered all types of meats, not just beef).

Both the meat and milk of organically-raised animals was found to have 50 percent more omega-3 fatty acids (the good polyunsaturated fat that gives foods like salmon, sardines and walnuts “super food” status”) and slightly lower levels of omega-6 (also a polysaturated fat, but unlike omega-3, it is already highly prevalent in standard diets).

It comes down to one thing: what the animals are fed. Omega-3s naturally occur more in grass, rather than grains, and organically-raised animals are free to graze at their free will.

“It’s not something magical about organic, it’s about what the animals are being fed,” organic industry consultant and author of the study, Charles M. Benbrook told the New York Times.

“For once, this is a pretty simple story.”
