Get shredded. Words by Samantha Teague.
Cheese dreams are made of… a super high-protein, low-fat alternative to the dairy lover’s favourite. While we’re not saying there’s anything wrong with a cheeseboard piled high with pungent Époisses, gooey double Brie or stinky Roquefort, those looking for their daily dairy dose may be searching for something a little healthier.
Born in the UK, on a farm in Cheshire in the northwest of England, Eat Lean claims to have 90% less fat, 40% more protein and 50% fewer calories than your standard full-fat cheddar. It’s also made from only two ingredients: British cow’s milk and a pinch of salt. The process to make it so high in protein and low in fat is a “secret” developed by the brand’s founders: three generations of cheesemakers.
Now for even better news. Eat Lean cheese has hit Aussie supermarket shelves and can be found at Woolworths stores across the country. It’s little pricier than other low-fat cheeses – but not by a lot.

Both the Eat Lean cheese block (200g) and Eat Lean shredded cheese (200g) are $5 or $25 per kg, while its Aussie equivalent Bega So Light Tasty 50% cheese block (500g) and Bega So Light shredded cheese (500g) are $9 or $18 per kg.
But, the difference in protein and fat content is notable, with both Eat Lean products containing 37g of protein and only 3g of fat per 100g, while the Bega So Light cheeses have 34.4g of protein and 15g of fat per 100g.
So how does it taste? Eat Lean says because of the super low fat content it looks and feels a little drier, but they’re constantly researching and testing to improve. It’s recommended you melt it – for example, in a toastie. They’ve also just released a spreadable cheese that’s yet to hit Aussie shelves. Health-conscious Philadelphia cream cheese fans, keep your eyes peeled for its arrival.
