How to do romance like an Italian

A romantic classic, the kiss from Umbria.

It is no mystery that Italians do romance well. With that famous passionate temperament, the legacy of poets such as Dante, Petrarca and the sassy D’Annunzio to teach you how to woo and seduce, plus the culinary delights on offer, Italian lovers certainly have an edge.

Unsurprisingly, it was the work of skillful chocolatiers from the medieval town of Perugia, in the heart of Umbria, who created the famous sweet morsel that’s perfectly suited to any romantic occasion – a luscious paste crowned by one perfect hazelnut, and coated in gleaming dark chocolate.

Not quite content with the utter greatness of their creation, they added to its allure by naming it Baci (“kisses”) and wrapped it in its famous star-dotted foil, hiding a secret love message.

For the ultimate act of devotion, why not try to make them yourself?

The benefits are many, from seriously impressing the recipient of your gift to licking the bowl. While you’re at it, include your own handwritten poem.

After all, why should you be satisfied with someone else’s words to tell your loved ones how precious they are?

In this loose adaptation of the classic recipe, I have added a splash of Frangelico – a hazelnut liqueur that perfectly marries with any chocolate-based confectionery. Although this may not be in the original, I always embrace the opportunity to add a personal touch. This is what home cooking is all about: unleashing your creativity and sharing with those you love.

Try my homemade Italian baci.
