A new apple craze has just landed in Australia and it's worth the hype.

Apple lovers will be rejoicing with news that the world’s best-selling apple, Kanzi, is now grown in Australia.

Known for its snappy crunch, the variety is set to explode onto the Australian market for its short but sweet season. With 45 growers in Australia already, the Kanzi is tipped to have in excess of 250,000 trees in the ground by 2018, which is just as well, since its season only runs from late April to the end of June.

The apple has a sweet, tangy flavour combined with a crisp, juicy crunch. This fragrant, bright red and cream coloured apple has the juiciness of a Gala and the twang of a Braeburn. The apples also keep their shape and their juiciness after cooking, so they make excellent baking apples for tarts or pies.

The Kanzi has even been blasted into space on an unmanned NASA rocket as part of a resupply flight for the 50 crew members at the International Space Station.

Kanzi apples are truly out of this world.

The variety is now grown in all major Australian apple regions including Stanthorpe, Orange, Batlow, Mornington, Yarra, Adelaide Hills, Manjimup and Perth Hills. Originally bred as a dessert apple in Europe, it was licensed to a limited number of Australian growers. However, the apple is now grown in sufficient quantities for national distribution through major grocery retailers and greengrocers.

That said, growers expect the fruit to sell out, so get them while you can.
