Well, this is a bit awkward.
A new survey has found that roughly 60 percent of Australians now tip when they go out to dinner, whether it’s at a restaurant or pub.
It was a fairly small sample group, with 2000 Aussies questioned by bookings start-up Clipp, with Sydneysiders proving the most generous, with 72 percent saying they leave a little something with the bill.
Melbourne, which is contentiously considered the dining capital, is much worse, with only 42 percent ponying up.
Tipping has been a major news story in American lately, where a number of venues, including Danny Meyer’s Union Square Café, have taken moves to ban tipping (and raise staff wages, as a result).
Fast, attention service is the thing most likely to score a serve a few more dollars, while the widely-held assumption that good looks equal a fat tip was largely incorrect, with only 1.5 percent admitting to hotness-based tipping.
