“I’m convinced that Woolworths have totally forgotten they even have this shop.”
A Sydney Woolworths that went viral last year for seemingly being a forgotten relic of days gone by could now be shutting up shop for good, as the shopping centre it’s located in in scheduled for redevelopment.
Eastwood Woolworths, in Eastwood Shopping Centre in Sydney’s northwest, recently became the subject of a viral Reddit thread and TikTok video, with shoppers loving the fact that the supermarket still had the supermarket giant’s old logo and branding. The distinctive red logo – featuring green stripes on either side of the letters – first debuted in stores across the country in 1987.
While Woolworths updated its branding back in 2002 to its current all-green logo, it seems its Eastwood location somehow managed to stay happily in the ’80s. According to locals, the store is a ‘fossil’ in more ways than just its branding – it also has no self-serve cash registers or coin-operated trolleys.

“This is my local Woolies,” one shopper wrote on the thread. “What’s in the aisles makes no sense either, it’s all just kind of chucked together. I’m convinced that Woolworths have totally forgotten they even have this shop.”
Others, though, were thrilled to see “a relic from simpler times”. “Nostalgic. Wish there was still a Franklins,” another added, referring to the now-defunct Australian discount supermarket chain. “A living fossil,” joked another, while one hopeful customer wrote, given the current state of grocery costs, “Are the prices still stuck in 1996?”
“As someone who lives in Denistone (the suburb right next to Eastwood), I can whole heartedly agree with this statement,” one person wrote. “It’s almost like a time capsule.”

But this beaut blast from the past could soon be no more, as Eastwood Shopping Centre has been approved for a major redevelopment. The new centre will feature several supermarkets – presumably from this century – along with a fresh food market, new dining and retail offerings, more than 1000 parking spaces and more than 400 new residential apartments.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a Woolies spokesperson has said that there will still be a Woolworths supermarket at the shopping centre, but they did not respond to questions about whether the store will retain its retro vibe.
Guess you can’t stop progress. No matter how much it might make people happy.
