The internet’s next challenge? Taking down coriander

delicious.

People really, really hate this herb.

It’s the backbone herb of Vietnamese bahn mi, Peruvian ceviche, Mexican fresh salsas and a slew of other cuisines and dishes, but for some people, coriander just tastes of soap and stink bugs.

Now, the coriander-haters have joined ranks to do something about it, calling on the Australian government to ban the sale of the herb across the country.

A change.org petition has already gathered more than 1,700 signatures, with a goal of 2,500.

In an interview, culinary icon Julia Childs once spoke of her hatred of the herb, stating if she saw it in a salad, “I would pick it out if I saw it and throw it on the floor.”

Around 14 percent of the population are believed to have a genetic disposition that makes the herb taste soapy, and scientists have found a chemical link – trans-2-decenal – between stink bugs and the herb.

So just how much do people hate it? These are some of the comments on the petition.

“I’ve eaten many ordinary things, including my own cooking, but none worse than coriander,” Shane Sercombe, Australia

“The devil’s lettuce ruins all that it touches,” Mark Hatton, Springwood

“It’s horrible, and ruins meals. If we can’t abolish  it completely, it should legally have to be declared on menus,” Amy McQuade, Australia

“CORIANDER MUST PERISH”, Annabelle Ross, Australia

Yikes. Maybe serve your coriander on the side this Christmas.
