KFC has fried chicken fans all battered up over a new menu item. The fast-food chain has released its own take on the classic Vietnamese bánh mì – that universally loved crisp white bread roll filled with pâté, sliced meats, fresh vegies and herbs and a satisfying seasoning sauce. The best bánh mì joints can have queues snaking up the block come lunchtime, and even our own PM has been spotted lining up for one in Sydney’s Marrickville.

The KFC Zinger Bánh Mì features a Zinger fillet in a crusty roll with fresh cucumber and carrot slaw, coriander and red chillies, all drizzled with mayo and Supercharged sauces. And while many are thrilled about the news, others are quick to point out that the fast-food chain’s version is not really a bánh mì, since it doesn’t contain any pâté.

The Zinger Bánh Mì was first trialled earlier this year, ruffling many feathers by the fact that it was only available at 10 stores in Newcastle, NSW, for a limited time. The trial was clearly a successful one, with the chain now launching the new menu item nationwide. But only for a limited time.

“At KFC, we love putting our own spin on modern foods, and the Zinger Bánh Mì is our take on a much-loved icon,” says Sally Spriggs, KFC Group Marketing Director. “It’s the perfect balance of spice, freshness and texture, a truly finger lickin’ good combination that celebrates flavour innovation while giving our fans another way to enjoy our famous Zinger.”

KFC also recently launched the limited-edition Zinger Nachos – corn chips and crispy zinger chicken pieces topped with guacamole, tomato salsa and Supercharged and nacho cheese sauces, which were available earlier this year. No word on whether we’ll be seeing these again. 

The Zinger Bánh Mì is available at participating KFC restaurants nationwide from Tuesday, November 4 until Monday, December 1, starting at $9.95.
