Big (and Mini) changes are coming to the Macca's McFlurry

Kick single-use plastic to the curb. Then have a little treat.

In the US, the McFlurry is about to say ‘goodbye’ to its plastic lid and ‘hello’ to a new petite serving size. In addition to the American “regular” size, a Mini McFlurry is being rolled out for that annoying friend who always says they don’t want dessert.

Not only that, but the packaging being introduced will now have a “four flap” paper lid to cut down on single-use plastic for both its McFlurry sizes.

McDonald’s US is proving once again that Australians are miles ahead of the curve and not just with our universal health care and gun control. The beloved McFlurry that Aussies absolutely nailed (hello, Milo!) is clearly the stuff of legend, thanks in part to our early adoption of more environmentally friendly packaging.

It’s a no-brainer for the fast food giant which is under consistent scrutiny for its environmental impact and minimal healthier options, particularly in North America.

The eco-friendlier cups are already available in other markets across Indonesia and Canada, while Australia’s McFlurry cups have adopted an open-top and nixed the lid altogether.

It’s unclear whether the Minis will make their way to Australia, or exactly how many millilitres of soft-serve is in the US Mini McFlurry.

In any case, having a smaller portion is always a good option if you’re giving the kids (or yourself) a treat and don’t want to go overboard. The Mini’s are also more affordable than a regular-sized McFlurry so you can keep your change for a rainy day.
