A popular menu item that has been available overseas for more than two decades has finally arrived Down Under.
The McGriddle – which is essentially a McMuffin with maple-flavoured hot cakes instead of bread – was created by McDonald’s executive chef Gerald Tomlinson in 1999.
But the breakfast sandwich, which has become a staple in countries such as Canada and the United States, didn’t hit stores until June 2003.
McGriddles have never been available in Australia – until now, with fans of the fast-food chain recently spotting the item at various locations around Sydney.
In May, a spokesperson confirmed to news.com.au that the fast-food chain was “trialling soft, warm McGriddles in select restaurants across New South Wales only. McGriddles feature griddle cakes with the sweet taste of maple, with the combination of sausage, sausage and egg, or bacon and egg, or simply enjoyed on its own.”
But after a successful soft launch, McGriddles will be now available Australia-wide, joining the national breakfast menu from Wednesday, July 9.

TikTok creator @littlemissfion was one of the first food content creators to spot the McGriddle Down Under.
“I got the Sausage and Egg McGriddle,” she said. “It’s like a McMuffin, but with pancakes and maple syrup.”
Adrian Widjy, better known as Places in Sydney, said his “prayer was answered” with the McGriddle finally being available in his hometown.
“I always have them when I am in Japan or Hong Kong,” he said.
“Now it’s here where I am in Sydney.”
The elated content creator said the sausage and fried egg was his personal favourite, loving the sweet and savoury combination of the breakfast item.
The McGriddle was also spotted at locations such as Macquarie Centre, Kingsford, Sylvania, Croydon and Haberfield.

Macca’s was clearly paying attention.
“Our Aussie fans absolutely obsessed over the sweet and savoury flavours of McGriddles when we trialled it earlier this year,” Amanda Nakad, marketing director of menu and brand for McDonald’s Australia, said in a company release.
