Old habits die hard.
How do you eat a McVitie’s chocolate digestives? Chocolate side up, right? Technically wrong, according to McVitie’s. Turns out we’ve all been eating the delicious treats wrong side up for the past 100 years.
Anthony Coulson, the general manager of McVitie’s factory in Stockport, Great Manchester, insists that the correct way to eat chocolate digestives is with the chocolate on the bottom and biscuit on the top.
“One of the very first things I learned when I got to join McVitie’s was chocolate side down to eat the digestive,” Coulson told the BBC. “Up until then, I’d always eaten it the other way round.”
Why should we be eating digestive biscuits chocolate side down, you ask? Well, the reasoning is quite obvious: your taste buds get a hit of the chocolate goodness first.
“It starts to melt, starts to get the flavour and away you go. It makes sense, right?,” stated Coulson.
In 2025, McVities will celebrate 100 years of chocolate digestives, a beloved biscuit that people have loved to claim has health benefits due to its name. In fact, when the original plain digestive was conceived two Scottish doctors believed the sodium bicarbonate ingredient would aid digestion. McVities have been manufacturing the plain digestive since 1892.
So there you have it folks, you now know how to correctly eat chocolate digestives, but as they say, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. We’ll continue to dunk ours in milk and eat whichever side we manage to catch in our mouth before the milk-soaked biscuit crumbles.
