Will the country starve again?
North Korea’s food supply is being threatened by its massive drought, which is causing devastation to its rice, soybean and maize crops. Even the North Korean government, usually tight-lipped about such things, has admitted there’s a serious problem, calling the drought its “worst in 100 years.”
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reports that the average North Korean now subsists on 250 grams of food a day – far below the recommended minimum of 600 grams.
It’s not the first time the country has experienced famine. In the 1990s, loss of Soviet support resulted in mass starvation. Numbers vary, but it’s estimated that as daily food rations diminished to less than one cup per person, at least 330,000 people died of starvation.
