After nearly 80 years, the company's fate is sealed.
Now might be a good time to hunt down all those Tupperware containers you’ve left at various people’s houses over the years… or hide the ones you’ve been hoarding. The iconic brand has put all our kitchen storage solutions in jeopardy with a bombshell announcement that it has filed for bankruptcy.
The company revealed in April that there was “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operating unless it could secure more cash. Tupperware shares have plunged since November 2023, when the business first revealed it was in trouble and has been in freefall ever since. Financial advisers were called in to try to save the beloved ‘burping seal’ brand and extend the shelf life of the business. The Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing petitions to reorganize the company rather than liquidate but it’s rarely a good sign.
Strong competition in the sector as well as consumer wariness over plastics leeching into food have compounded Tupperware’s problems in recent years.

Tupperware was a massive hit with housewives everywhere when it burst onto the scene in the 1950s. Back in the day, sales were mostly done through Tupperware parties (for our Gen Z friends, these were social events where women gathered to bitch about their husbands and drink sherry). But a lot has changed since then.
Despite a recent lift in sales during the lockdowns, when people were trying to find containers to store the fruits of all their panic-baking, Tupperware has failed to keep up with trendier storage brands who are reaching a younger market through social media.
So mums, if you’re reading this and wondering if we still have those cake containers you sent us home with that time, you’re definitely mistaken.
