If you love Creme Eggs as much as we do, we advise that you steer clear of these. They will shatter all your illusions. This is not a Creme Egg, but some kind of nefarious impostor, and we were definitely not prepared for the fallout. There were a few tears shed, and several people had to go home early to work through their feelings, but mostly we just needed to lie down somewhere quiet while the sugar-induced hallucinations subsided. 3/10

We foolishly assumed that these would be excellent. How very wrong we were. It might be Haigh’s-level choc, but we don’t know what this filling is – it sure isn’t caramel. 3.5/10

Look, we expected more from Darrell Lea. Is everything okay over there, guys? These were too soft and had an almost stale taste. Several staffers mentioned an odd licorice-like aftertaste, while another picked up notes of soap. No mention of ‘chocolate’, though. 3.5/10

Had we all reached peak chocolate, or was this just a ball of goo? These do not taste like a KitKat. We shall not be repeating this experience. 4/10

Sometimes it’s good to keep your expectations low. None of us were really expecting the cheapest mini egg on our list to set our world on fire, and it didn’t. These are a bargain (five bucks for a 150g bag), but you get what you pay for here. 4/10

Darrell Lea let us all down again with this poor showing. Sure, it’s pretty, but it tastes like regret, with an excess of outer shell failing to disguise the second-rate chocolate inside. 4.5/10

Where is the proper honeycomb filling? We do not approve of these mixed-in ‘bits’ you have offered us. These made us feel a bit sad, but that could just have been our blood sugar levels hitting crisis point. 4.5/10

There’s chocolate for grown-ups, and then there’s Kinder. Kids will love these super-sweet eggs, which come with a milky centre that one taster described as “yuckers”, which just goes to show that there’s a discerning inner child in all of us. 5/10

If you’re a Caramello fan, you’re going to love these. If you’re not, you’re going to need a glass of water. Like, now. Comments varied wildly, from the passionate “don’t listen to the haters”, to a single lowercase “ok” from our Food Director, which speaks volumes, really. 5.5/10

We were expecting more from Lindt, and so these were a bit of a let-down. They were entirely satisfactory for a stock-standard solid egg, of course, but there were whispers afoot of a ‘strange’ aftertaste. 6/10

Cadbury is synonymous with chocolate, and these mini hollow eggs certainly aren’t going to offend anyone. They’re perfectly acceptable, unless you’re tasting them alongside a superior product, in which case you’ll notice that the flavour is sweeter and not quite as cocoa-rich, and the mouthfeel is less silky. But if you’re paying $11.50 for a box of 10 (or less, if they’re on special), who is really going to complain? 6/10

If you’re all about texture, these eggs are for you. All crispy crunch, not much chocolate to speak of. 6.5/10

The chocolate is rich, the wafer is crisp and the filling is creamy. But does it stand up to a Ferrero Rocher? Not on your Nelly. We’d still eat a whole bag of them, though. 7/10

You have no idea how much we appreciated getting a bit of dark chocolate into the mix by this stage. Smooth, a little bit luxe; an egg for the grown-ups. 7/10

These were a firm favourite among the team, with the word ‘classic’ thrown into the comments more than once. You can never go wrong with Cadbury, and at an accessible price ($7.50 for a 114g bag), you can easily make these your Easter go-to without hurting that hip pocket. 7/10
