The Guardian revealed that UK supermarkets alone put 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging into the world each year, to devastating effect. Thankfully leading supermarkets are beginning to take responsibility (in Australia anyway), encouraging consumers to reduce their personal waste by bringing in their own reusable options for toting edibles about.

Forget about using cling film wrap for your food; it’s a waste of money and a particularly non eco-friendly item as it can’t be recycled. Some types of aluminium foil are recyclable (depending on your program) but your greenest option is to stick to Tupperware (especially glass options) or beeswax wraps when it comes to food storage.

Forgo plastic cutlery once and for all. The alternatives? Keep some spares in your desk at all time (or in the bottom of your work bag for that matter). If that’s not an option look to biodegradable and compostable cutlery alternatives, like bamboo knives and forks.

You read that right, buying in bulk can make your kitchen more sustainable. Why exactly? Bulk items (particularly wholesale) are less likely to be sold in plastic packaging. In general try to avoid plastic packaging where you can; store your fresh and dried items instead in glass jars or containers.
