The ultimate dairy queen.

In the picturesque plains of Kerry, Queensland, Tommerup’s Dairy Farm is living proof of the timeless charm of traditional farming practices, and a beacon of sustainability.

Founded by Dave and Kay Tommerup, this family-owned farm has been quietly playing its part nurturing the land, educating the community and rearing high-quality, ethically raised livestock. The result is cream, cultured butter and ice cream of unparalleled quality. And it’s all thanks to 20 very happy Jersey cows.

At the heart of Tommerup’s Dairy Farm lies its unique Farm School program, where students from all walks of life are invited to experience the wonders of agriculture and sustainable living. As the sun rises over the rolling hills, eager young minds gather to learn the age-old practices that have sustained communities for generations. The program not only imparts knowledge about farming; it also instils a deep appreciation for the land and its resources.

Under the guidance of experienced farmers, students gain hands-on experience in tending to crops, tending to livestock and understanding the delicate balance between nature and agriculture. From sowing seeds in the fertile soil to milking the gentle Jersey cows, every aspect of farming is explored. The Farm School program weaves together practical knowledge with lessons on sustainability, inspiring the next generation to embrace responsible farming practices.

Dave and Kay’s dedication to sustainable farming goes beyond education. Their passion for the environment is reflected in the diverse range of produce that flourishes on their land. Of course, the highlights are the velvety Jersey cream, the rich cultured butter and the luscious homemade ice cream, each crafted with love and care. These products are a testament to the farmers’ commitment to produce that reflects the harmony between farmer and animal. The quality produce has also been recognised now that Tommerup’s Dairy Farm is a national finalist in the 2023 Harvey Norman delicious. Produce Awards.

But in addition to dairy products, Tommerup’s Dairy Farm also raises a variety of livestock, ensuring the animals live fulfilling lives in a natural environment. The heritage-breed pigs, nurtured on milk, roam freely and are sold as milk-fed pork. The farm’s veal – tender and flavourful – stems from a commitment to ethical farming. Instead of the morally dubious practice of removing male calves only days’ old from their mothers, the Tommerups allow the calves to stay with mum to suckle for two months, before moving them to the ‘big kids paddock’ to graze on pastures until they’re nearly a year of age.

Hens roam freely by day across 80 acres of pasture, fertilising the land as they go, before heading back to their caravans overnight. The result? You guessed it – flavourful, high-quality eggs.

In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, Tommerup’s Dairy Farm is a sanctuary for both the land and the human spirit. It serves as a reminder that sustainable farming is not just about producing food, but also about nurturing the earth and fostering a harmonious relationship with it.
